Run Max OSX on Intel PC

March 9th, 2008

We get a few emails every month about running Mac OSX on a PC and its something I never gave much thought to. Well in the process of upgrading some machines this came to mind, so I did a bit of digging and found a pretty good solution that works very nicely.

For anyone that has ever wanted to run Mac OSX on a PC, its actually quite easy to setup and a great way to give the Mac OS a good test run. You could also install it as your sole operating system and run Parallels for Mac, which allows you to run Windows XP etc from your Mac, and it does this very well. I have been running Parallels on a Macbook and I am very impressed with the speed of XP.

Installing OSX on Your PC

Here is  a quick rundown of what you will be need to do. I will break it down to basics, so that when you read the full guide it should be fairly simple to follow.

1) A completely separate hard drive or external hard drive will be required. You cannot install this on an existing drive, not even as a partition. Just get another drive, I did it on an external drive and it worked nicely.

2) You will need a couple of tools, don’t worry these are free. You will need to download Forensic Acquisition Utilities and WMI Tools from Microsoft.

3) You will then copy the OSX image to your external/spare/other drive with forensic acquisition tools. WMI tools are just used to find the physical drive name. You will need this drive name when copying the image. Once the image is copied, you will be able to boot into OSX. Just set the boot drive in the bios.

Pretty simple. Here is the full guide with the commands you need

Backing Up Your Data – Outlook

March 4th, 2008

Last time we discussed backing up and the importance of backing up. Unfortunately most people still don’t backup anywhere near as often as they should, while some don’t backup at all.

Alright, so when everything comes crashing down, the first thing 99% of users want to recover, is their email. Today we will look at a quick and dirty backup for your Outlook mail. See the previous post if you want to backup Outlook Express mail.

Note: The procedure to backup mail in Outlook is the same concept in Outlook 2002, 2003 and 2007, but it may vary slightly in the menu options and location of buttons etc.  The files you want to backup are your .pst files. You can access these through Windows explorer, but generally its easier to find them via Outlook.

Backup Outlook 2007 Mail

1) Fire up Outlook 2007
2) Goto File -> Data File Management
3) You will now see a window with all of your data files and their location
4) Click on a data file that you want to backup and then click Open Folder. This will open the location in Windows Explorer. You can now copy the .pst file and backup to another drive/cd/dvd etc.
5) If you have multiple data files, repeat the process above for each file that you want backed up.

That was pretty simple. Now if your hard drive crashes, you don’t have to worry about losing all of that valuable email. Just be sure to backup on a regular basis.

Backup Your Data Now!!

March 3rd, 2008

I am still amazed at how many emails I get daily from people that all of a sudden have a corrupt hard drive and now they desperately need to get their data. Of course they haven’t backed up their data either.

I will admit that sometimes it is easy to forget about running those backups on that crucial data. So what you should do is set yourself reminders that alert you regularly, or even better setup an automated backup system. Just make sure you test the backups now and then.

Over the next few weeks we will cover the basics of backing up your data and how you can setup your own automated hassle free backup procedures.

Backing up data in Outlook Express

For today, lets quickly look at how you can backup your data from Outlook Express. This is one I hear about too often – the hard drive crashes, and all emails and contact data are gone for good….well not always, sometimes the data can be recovered. So just backup it before that happens!! Much easier.

OK, the quick way to backup your Outlook Express data is to copy the folder where the OE data is kept. You can copy it to dvd/cd, external drive or whatever you prefer.

Exporting Outlook Express Data

1) Click Tools -> Options
2) Click on the maintenance tab, then click on the store folder
oe-file-store

3) Highlight the store location, then hit (ctrl-c) copy
4) Paste the store location into windows explorer or click start->run, then paste in the store location and click ok
5) Copy these files to your backup location. Preferably make a backup folder called: mail-backup-date (and insert the data of the backup)

Export Address Book

Export your address book to a .csv file (comma separated file).

1) Click File->Export->Address Book
2) Select Text File (CSV) then click Export

oe-export.gif
3) Select the folder to export your address book (should be the same as where you backed up your mail)
4) Give your backup file a name and date
5) Click Next
7) Select the fields you want to export, then click finish
8) You are done

Do it now!! Don’t say you weren’t warned.

Internet Explorer 8

March 2nd, 2008

The news from Microsoft is that we can expect a beta release of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) sometime in June.

With IE8, there is supposedly some major improvements in security and compliance with web standards. So developers can expect better support for CSS and Ajax programming.

The development of IE8 has already passed the Acid2 Fast test in December. This test is used to see how well a browser conforms to web standards.

We have heard that IE8 might be demoed by Microsoft at the Mix conference which starts March 5. We will keep you updated.

In the meantime, you can fix errors in previous versions of Internet Explorer with our free scan.
