New Patches Fix Flaw

published on June 12th, 2008 . by Markus - Add a Comment

The monthly updates released on Tuesday from Microsoft brought a few Critical repairs to its customers, with one important fix corrected a remotely executable vulnerability in the Bluetooth stack.

According to Microsoft, the flaw (MS08-036) could allow attackers to gain complete control over Windows XP and Vista machines by flooding the computers with bogus service requests. The flaw has not been publicly announced (Microsoft did not say who reported it), and is not being exploited in the wild, the company says.

MS08-034 plugs a hole in the Bluetooth stack in Windows that could allow remote code execution. The bulletin was rated critical because an attacker could exploit the vulnerability remotely to take control of an affected system and install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Windows Media Player Error: C00D119A

published on April 3rd, 2008 . by Markus - Add a Comment

If there is one thing I get really frustrated over on my computer is when my windows media player won’t play a video because of some error. This happened to me the other day when I got a C00D119A error, so today I thought I’d talk about what this annoying error is and how to resolve it.

You will get a C00D119A error when a required codec is not installed on your computer, a codec is software that the Player uses to decompress a file before playing it. In most cases your media player will automatically download the codec so that all clips can be played, but occasionally it does not.

The reason your computer would not automatically download the codec is that the security levels on your machine are so high that it just cannot download it. So to fix this problem you must adjust your internet security settings to allow codecs to be downloaded. To do this follow these steps or watch this clip;

  • Click on your Control Panel
  • Click Internet Options
  • Click the Security tab
  • In the Security level for this zone area, click medium Level
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK

How to Turn Your Firewall On or Off

published on March 12th, 2008 . by Markus - Add a Comment

I have had a few requests from people worried about getting virus’s and other bad stuff on how to turn on their Windows Firewall. The firewall for those who are unsure is simply a program that allows or denies things entering your computer, you could even call it a PC bouncer!

A firewall is a very important tool to have enabled on your computer, so follow these simple steps to activate your Windows Firewall;

  • Go to start then control panel
  • Scroll down and click on Windows Firewall
  • The Windows Firewall box should now pop up
  • Now click on Turn Windows Firewall on or off
  • You may need to allow permission (may be different in XP)
  • Here you can check if your computer is running the firewall
  • If it is not, click On
  • Now click Apply
  • Click OK and your Firewall will be activated

Here is a basic video on how to turn on your firewall which I made quickly although it doesn’t seem to show all of the steps, so use the steps above and the video to successfully turn on your Windows Firewall.
