Common Outlook Express Errors

published on August 7th, 2008 . by Markus - Add a Comment

We get quite a few emails regarding Outlook Express problems and troubleshooting. So I will cover some of the common Outlook Express errors that you might encounter.

There are some common categories of errors in Outlook Express, so I will break the errors down into their appropriate category.

Problems Sending Mail in Outlook Express

Sending email in Outlook Express can return various error messages and these are very common. First start by checking that you are properly connected to the internet. It is amazing how many people try to send without first being connected. Also note that some errors may be on the other users end - such as: user not found, mailbox not found etc.

Error 550 - Relaying Not Allowed
Can’t Send Mail, No Sender Specified
Mal-formed message ID: Line 3 References too long

Errors Opening Outlook Express or Outlook Express Crashing

This is quite a common problem in Outlook Express and in most cases the crashing is due to a corrupt .DBX file. These files are the database files for Outlook Express and store all the mail messages. If these files become corrupt, Outlook Express can fail to open or crash.

To avoid these errors it is important to compact your mailboxes on a regular basis. If OE wont open at all, you may need to move the DBX files until you get OE open.

In some cases, you may also have registry errors associated with Outlook Express and your mail files. You will need to run a registry repair tool to fix this common problem.

DBX File Errors

As mentioned above, the DBX files associated with Outlook Express can get corrupted over time. It is recommended to do regular compacting of inboxes to help avoid this problem. In certain situations you may need a special DBX repair tool. We will discuss more on that later.

published on May 1st, 2008 . by Markus - Add a Comment

If you are using Outlook Express but you have your address book still on a Hotmail account, you can move all your contacts across.

To get started on the transfer you first need to configure your Outlook Express to use a Hotmail account, you do this by Windows Live Mail which I have talked about in this post.

When you have configured your Outlook Express to use Hotmail account just follow these points and you will be able to access all of your address book in Outlook;

  • Access your Hotmail account and verify the contacts are in the address book
  • Open Outlook Express
  • Open the Tools menu
  • Click Address Book
  • In the Address Book display click Synchronize Now on the Tools menu

You will now be able to access all your contacts from your Hotmail account in your Outlook Express.

published on April 8th, 2008 . by Markus - Add a Comment

Many of you may in the past have been using your Outlook Express account to send and/or receive email from your hotmail account, but recently may have been having problems or errors when you try to do so.

You may have received this error;

  • Unknown Error

When you click Details on this error you would have received the following details;

  • HTTPMAIL: 10:09:18 [rx]
  • HTTP/1.1 402 Access to Hotmail via Outlook & Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/hotmailplus/overview

Although if you are running a computer with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 you may have recieved these errors;

  • Could not connect to Hotmail as username@hotmail.com
  • Hotmail no longer allows email access via Outlook Express for free Hotmail/MSN accounts

The reason you will get either of these two errors when you try to access hotmail from your Outlook Express account is simply as the last error says, you can no longer access hotmail from your Outlook account using a free Hotmail account.

If you want an easy fix to this problem you can just get a paid hotmail account, or if you don’t want to do that you can do the follow to solve your problem.

Outlook Express

To use any web based email service with your Outlook Express you need to install Windows Live Mail on your computer. Windows Live Mail is a Microsoft program that lets you access, read, and compose e-mail messages even when you are not connected to the Internet. Whenever you do access the internet it automatically updates your email from any of the popular web based email accounts including hotmail.

For many people there is nothing more frustrating than getting errors in their Outlook/Outlook Express. I have talked to people who have taken an hour to do a simple 2 minute email just because they kept receiving Outlook errors.

  • Go to the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts
  • Click View or change existing e-mail accounts
  • Click Next
  • Click your POP3 account

Outlook 2007

  • Go to the Tools menu, click Account Settings

If you need to speed up your working time on Outlook and you haven’t yet used shortcuts, then use these shortcuts. By learning these and getting used to using them you will browse and use Outlook much faster (the trouble still is learning to use them!).

Here is a list of some Outlook keyboard shortcuts;

  • Jump to Mail: CTRL + 1 (Press “Control” button and “1″ button simultaneously)
  • Jump to Calendar: CTRL + 2
  • Jump to Contacts: CTRL + 3
  • Jump to Tasks: CTRL + 4
  • Jump to Notes: CTRL + 5
  • Create a new email message: CTRL + Shift + M
  • Create a new appointment item: CTRL + Shift + A or CTRL + Shift + Q
  • Reply to sender: CTRL + R
  • Reply to all: Ctrl + Shift + R
  • Forward message: CTRL + F
  • Send Message: CTRL + Enter or Alt + S
  • Launch Advanced Find: F3
  • Spell checker: F7

  • Increases the space of Outlook Express files
  • Files damaged in failure

POP3 Error Codes

published on October 25th, 2007 . by Markus - Add a Comment

Local e-mail clients use the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), an application-layer Internet standard protocol, to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over a TCP/IP connection. Many subscribers to individual Internet service provider e-mail accounts access their e-mail with client software that uses POP3.

POP3 is designed to delete mail on the server as soon as the user has downloaded it. However, some implementations allow users or an administrator to specify that mail be saved for some period of time. POP can be thought of as a “store-and-forward” service.

The following are a list of error codes you will find while using a POP3 email connection;

Error Code

Error Type

Description

0×800420CB POP3_NO_STORE Mail cannot be stored on server
0×800CCC90 POP3_RESPONSE_ERROR Client response invalid
0×800CCC91 POP3_INVALID_USER_NAME Invalid user name or user not found
0×800CCC92 POP3_INVALID_PASSWORD Password not valid for account
0×800CCC93 POP3_PARSE_FAILURE Unable to interpret response
0×800CCC94 POP3_NEED_STAT STAT Command required
0×800CCC95 POP3_NO_MESSAGES No messages on server
0×800CCC96 POP3_NO_MARKED_MESSAGES No messages marked for retrieval
0×800CCC97 POP3_POPID_OUT_OF_RANGE Message ID out of range

SMTP Errors

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a relatively simple, text-based protocol, in which one or more recipients of a message are specified (and in most cases verified to exist) and then the message text is transferred.

It is a client-server protocol, whereby a client transmits an email message to a server. Either an end-user’s email client, a.k.a. MUA (Mail User Agent), or a relaying server’s MTA (Mail Transfer Agents) can act as an SMTP client.
