What is a General Protection Fault

published on November 27th, 2007 . by Markus - Add a Comment

A General Protection Fault (GPF) in the Intel x86 and AMD x86-64 architectures, and other unrelated architectures is a fault (a type of an interrupt) which can encompass several cases, where protection mechanisms within the processor architecture are violated by any of the programs that is running, whether it be the kernel or user program.

The mechanism is first described in section 9.8.13 in Intel 80386 Programmer’s reference manual from 1986. The General Protection Fault is implemented as an interrupt (vector number 13) in both x86 and AMD64-architectures.

If the processor detects a protection violation it stops executing the code and sends a General Protection Fault interrupt.

In most cases, the operating system will simply remove the failing process from the execution queue, signal the user and continue executing another program. If however the operating system fails to catch the General Protection Fault, i.e. another protection violation occurs before the operating system returns from the previous General Protection Fault-interrupt, the processor will signal a Double fault (interrupt vector 8, a typical BSOD scenario.)

If yet another failure occurs, the processor will shut down. It will then only respond to a reset or init (that is, pressing the reset-button, or rebooting the entire system) and NMI-interrupts (unless it has previously failed when handing NMI-interrupts, in which case it will ignore these too.)

Windows Safe Mode

Safe mode is a diagnostic mode used by certain computer operating systems, including Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, as well as other complex electronic devices.

While an operating system is in safe mode, it will have reduced functionality, but it is easier to isolate problems because many non-core components are disabled.

is possible to start your Windows XP system in the Safe Mode from the Windows Advanced Options menu. Within this menu you can also choose various other options that help you debug your Windows system. To access this menu, you will need to reboot your computer, then press the F8 key. Find more details below.

Device Driver Updates

I recently had to update a device driver in my older laptop, so I thought today I would discuss in laymans terms what a device driver is and the best way to update them.

A device driver, or software driver is a computer program allowing higher-level computer programs to interact with a computer hardware device.

A driver typically communicates with the device through the computer bus or communications subsystem to which the hardware is connected. When a calling program invokes a routine in the driver, the driver issues commands to the device.

Damaged or incompatible plug-in

Windows Media Player did not close properly. A damaged or incompatible plug-in might have caused the problem to occur. As a precaution, any plug-ins that you installed (as opposed to plug-ins that were included with the Player by default) have been disabled.

If you enable any of these plug-ins and the Player continues to close unexpectedly, it is recommended that you identify the damaged or incompatible plug-in and remove it.

To troubleshoot plug-ins (basic)

1. On the Tools menu, point to Plug-ins, and then click each plug-in that has a check mark next to its name. This disables the plug-ins that you installed.
2. On the Tools menu, point to Plug-ins, and then select one of the plug-ins. This enables the plug-in.
3. Play the same content you were playing when the Player closed unexpectedly.
4. Do one of the following:

  •  If the Player closes unexpectedly, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Plug-ins tab. Select the plug-in you last enabled, and then click Remove.
  • If the Player does not close unexpectedly, enable another plug-in and repeat Steps 3 and 4 until you identify the damaged or incompatible plug-in.
